My Short Stories

I like to write short stories as well as novels. I will be putting up a new short story every quarter. I had started out doing these monthly, but real life as opposed to writing life kept me rather busy and a bit distracted. It will be a new short story every quarter rather than monthly. At least until I fully retire. These stories are free, but remain copyrighted by Winifred Halsey.

Third Quarter 2013

This quarter I'm doing a twofer. Two very short writings. One flash fiction story and one is an essay.

Tight Lines

This is a short flash fiction (under 500 words) I wrote for a contest in Alfred Hitchcock's Magazine. It got an honorable mention.

Night Train from Washington

This is an essay I wrote after taking a night train from Washington.

Second Quarter 2013

SPIDERS AND SNAKES

I wrote this short story when I was thinking about the movie MARS ATTACK, where the aliens are not nice and definitely deceptive. If you haven't seen the movie, it is wonderful and has a very remarkable cast including Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Danny DeVito, Jim Brown, Pierce Brosman, Natalie Portman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michael J. Fox, Rod Steiger (can you believe that?), Martin Short and Tom Jones, along with a few others. Directed by Tim Burton. The cast is fabulous! And the movie is very funny.

At any rate, this short story has its origins with that movie and thinking of the concept: Maybe we've been here before.

First Quarter 2013

DAVDII NEVER VISITS

This is a dark story. Written when I was in a fairly dark mood (to put it mildly) some years ago. Still, I think it is interesting in a very dystopian way. About a mother who'd like to see a child she bore, but never will. Just a warning.

October 2012

Rescue Mission

This story is one where I was just trying to write a straight-forward mystery. Mystery in a bit wider sense, as the murder happens at the end. Obviously I won't say who or why. That's the mystery.

September 2012

Murder in the Pitti Palace

As some people know, I am an archer. I enjoy it and I'm good at it. I shoot a traditional recurve bow using wood arrows. This is in part because I'm a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism and wood arrows are required. But since I'm also a traditionalist, I probably would use them anyway. In fact, I use them in our regular archery league that has nothing to do with SCA.

That being said, I decided I had to write a short story with a company of archers. A murder mystery set in one of my favorite places, Florence, Italy.

As for where to set the murder, that was easy. When we went to Florence the guidebook said if you didn't have anything else better to do, you might go to the Pitti Palace. It is much better than that! Thoroughly enjoyed it. Very evocative of Renaissance Italy, which is a time I find very fascinating.

So this story combines my love of archery, the Pitti Palace, and takes place in 16th century Florence.

Enjoy!

August 2012

Considerations on the Second Crusade

Overall I'm not much on vampires. There are some I like very much, Angel for one. The original Dark Shadows was wonderful in its campiness. I wanted to write about a vamphyre who is not tormented unduly. He is what he is. This story is part history, part vamphyre, part philosophy.

I hope you enjoy it!

July 2012

Heritage

This is a slightly eerie story with strong shades of The Shadow Over Innsmouth by H.P. Lovecraft, which is a story I really enjoy.

May / June 2012

By Tintagel's Light

I didn't get up a new story in May as real life intruded in the form of work and a wonderful vacation in Scandinavia. However, the short story below is one of my favorites! A sweet middle age love story.

Enjoy!

Death's Other Kingdom

A death in the family inspired this short story.

Mrs. O'Leary's Boarding House

My grandmother kept a boarding house in Chicago. The house was built in the 1840s. This story draws on my experiences staying there on occasion. Not that she ever had alien boarders. That I knew of...
